Our
Plan

Spay/Neuter Laws Initiative

Mississippi is facing an urgent animal overpopulation crisis. Shelters across the state are overcrowded, and thousands of dogs and cats face euthanasia each year due to a lack of resources. At Laws for Paws MS, we are committed to advocating for stronger spay/neuter laws and expanding access to affordable sterilization services to address this crisis at its root.

We believe in proactive solutions that promote responsible pet ownership while reducing the strain on shelters and rescues. That’s why we are working to push for:

  • Mandatory Spay/Neuter for Dogs & Cats – Requiring sterilization unless exempt due to age, health, or licensed breeding.

  • Unaltered License Option – Owners who choose not to spay or neuter their pets must obtain an unaltered license, with fees helping fund spay/neuter programs.

  • Stronger Enforcement for Strays & Impounded Animals – Ensuring that any dog or cat impounded for a second time is sterilized before release to prevent further overpopulation.

By supporting spay/neuter policies, we can reduce euthanasia rates, improve public safety, and create a more sustainable future for animals in Mississippi.

Community Education

At Laws for Paws MS, we believe that education is key to creating lasting change in animal welfare. Many pet owners are unaware of the impact that unplanned litters have on Mississippi’s shelter system, the risks of pet overpopulation, and the benefits of spaying and neutering. That’s why we are committed to raising awareness and providing accessible, factual information about responsible pet ownership.

Our Community Education Initiatives focus on:

  • The Importance of Spay & Neuter – Educating the public on how sterilization prevents unwanted litters, reduces euthanasia rates, and improves pet health.

  • Responsible Pet Ownership – Encouraging proper care, including vaccinations, microchipping, and understanding the long-term commitment of pet ownership.

  • Legislation & Animal Welfare Advocacy – Informing the community about Mississippi’s current animal welfare laws, proposed changes, and how they can take action to support stronger protections for animals.

  • Youth & School Outreach – Partnering with educators and youth groups to teach the next generation about kindness toward animals, responsible pet care, and the role of adoption and rescue.

Through education and advocacy, we aim to empower pet owners, reduce shelter intake, and build a more compassionate community for Mississippi’s animals.

Fundraising

At Laws for Paws MS, we recognize that cost is one of the biggest barriers preventing pet owners from spaying or neutering their animals. To address this, we are actively fundraising to provide spay/neuter vouchers that help cover the cost of sterilization for low-income pet owners and those in underserved communities.

Important Update: We Cannot Accept Donations Yet!

We are still in the process of becoming an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit and, until our status is fully approved, we legally cannot accept donations. Once we complete this process, we will share details on how you can contribute to our mission!

Our Spay/Neuter Voucher Program aims to:

  • Make Spay & Neuter Services More Accessible – Many pet owners want to do the right thing but simply cannot afford the procedure. Our vouchers help ease this financial burden.

  • Reduce Overpopulation at Its Source – By funding sterilization, we can prevent thousands of unwanted litters and decrease the number of homeless animals entering shelters.

  • Support Local Veterinary Clinics & Shelters – We are trying to partner with trusted veterinarians and spay/neuter clinics to ensure pet owners have access to safe, affordable services.

How We Plan to Raise Funds (Once We Are 501(c)(3) Certified)

To support this initiative, we organize fundraisers, community events, and partnerships with local businesses to make spay/neuter services available to more pet owners in need. Some of our ongoing efforts include:

  • Donation Jar Program – Partnering with local businesses to collect small donations that directly fund spay/neuter procedures.

  • Fundraising Events – From yoga fundraisers to benefit nights at local restaurants, we are trying to create fun ways for the community to give back.

  • Merchandise Sales – Offering branded items like stickers, with proceeds going toward spay/neuter vouchers.

  • Sponsorship & Grants – Seeking funding from businesses and animal welfare organizations to expand our reach.
